Topography - Geology
Bac Ninh’s terrain is rather flat with the main slope from North to South and from West to East, which is reflected through the surface flows into Cau River, Duong River and Thai Binh River. The geological difference is not big, plain area often has popular height from 3 – 7 m, midland and mountainous land has common height of 300 – 400 m. Hill and mountain area takes up a small ratio (0.53%) compared to the total natural land area of the province, mainly allocated in two districts of Que Vo and Tien Du. Mountaintop has popular height 60 – 100 m.

However, the province lies within the Northeast – Northern tectonic region making its geologic structure the same as that of the bow – shaped Dong Trieu in the Northeast region. Bac Ninh’s geology is more stable than that of Ha Noi and other urban areas in the Northern plain region to construct buildings. In addition, there are some low areas, which can be made into ecological landscape of ponds in rainy season to serve cultural and tourism activities if they are exploited appropriately.

Climate
Bac Ninh lies within the monsoon tropical climate region which is clearly divided into four distinct seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter. There is apparent difference in temperature between hot wet summer and cold dry winter.

Within 12 years till now, the annual average temperature is 24oC, monthly average temperature is 29.4 oC (in July), and the lowest average temperature is 17.4oC (in January). The temperature difference between the highest month and the lowest month is 12oC.

The average relative humidity of Bac Ninh is about 81%, the difference of humidity among months is not clear, the lowest average humidity is from 72% to 75% which is often from October to December every one year.

Bac Ninh’s average rainfall is about 1,500 mm but the precipitation is not evenly distributed throughout the year. Rainy season mainly starts from May to October, accounting for 80% of the annual total rainfall. The dry season is from November to April the following year, and only accounts for 20% of the annual total rainfall. The area to receive the highest average rainfall are Tu Son town, Yen Phong district, Tien Du district, and the one to receive the least average rainfall is Que Vo district.

Wind and sun: About 12 recent years, the total annual average sunny hours are 1,417 hours, of which July has the highest sunny hours of 168 hours, January has the least sunny hours of 64 hours. Annually, there are two major windy seasons: the Northeast monsoon season and Southeast monsoon season. The Northeast monsoon season lasts from October of this year to March of the following year, the average wind speed in January is about 2.6m/s; the Southeast monsoon season lasts from April to September which often brings along warm air causing heavy rain, the average wind speed in July is about 2.4m/s.

Rivers and Hydrology
Bac Ninh features a rather dense system of rivers and canals with high density of river network 1.0 – 1.2 km/km2. There are 3 large river systems include Duong river, Cau river and Thai Binh river.

Duong River : With the length of 42 km in Bac Ninh’s territory. Total average volume water is 31.6 million m3. The highest water level at Ho wharf is 9.7 m, the lowest water level is 0.07 m. Volume flow in rainy season is 3053.7 m3 /s and in dry season is 728 m3 /s. Duong River has high content of alluvium, in rainy season, there is 2.8 kg alluvium in each 1 m3 of water averagely.

Cau River : Total length of this river is 290 km of which 70 km flows through Bac Ninh province, the annual water volume is approximately 5 billion m3. At Dap Cau, the highest water level is 7.84 m, the lowest water level is – 0.19 m. Volume flow in rainy season is 1288.5 m3 /s and in dry season is 52.74 m3 /s.

Thai Binh River: With the length of 385 km, the part flowing through Bac Ninh is 17 km, the annual water volume is approximately 35.95 billion m3. Because of most the riverbed is wide with little slope, shallow bottom. Therefore Thai Binh is one of the rivers to be deposited the most. At Cat Khe hydrological station, volume flow in the rainy season is 2224.71 m3 /s and in dry season is 336.45 m3 /s.

Besides, Bac Ninh has inland river systems such as Ngu Huyen Khe river, Dau river, Boi river, Tao Khe river, Dong Khoi river, Dai Quang Binh river. Moreover, the underground water deposit is rather big, averagely 400,000 m3/day, the water containing layer is 3 – 5 m away from the ground on average with the depth of around 40 m, the water quality is good. All of this water deposit can be used for producing and living in the province.

Forest resources
Bac Ninh’s forest is not large, mainly is planted forest. Total forest land area is about 619.8 hectares, mostly in Bac Ninh city, Tien Du district and Que Vo district. Bac Ninh’s vegetation is mainly annual trees, perennial plants and planted forest. Of which, the area of annual trees accounts for 54% the total natural land area, the area of perennial plants and planted forest is only around 1%.

Land resources
The province’s total natural land area is 822.71 km2, of which agriculture land accounts for 53.12%, , aquaculture land accounts for 6.16%, forestry land accounts for 0.75%, specialized and residential land accounts for 39.2%, unused land is 0.77%.

Mineral resources
Bac Ninh is poor in mineral resources, mainly construction materials such as clay for making brick and title, pottery with 4 million tons of volume in Bac Ninh city, Que Vo and Tien Du district, arenaceous rock with volume of about 1 million ton in Thi Cau ward, Bac Ninh city, sandstone in Vu Ninh with volume of about 300.000 m3. Besides, there is peat coal in Yen Phong district with volume of 60.000 – 200.000 tons.
