Celebrating 1,000th birth anniversary of General Ly Thuong Kiet (1019 - 2019)

(BNP) - In the evening of May 16, Yen Phong district solemnly celebrated 1,000th birth anniversary of General Ly Thuong Kiet (1019-2019) and received Recognition of historical-cultural relics of the province for Ly Thuong Kiet temple (in Tam Giang commune).

Ly Thuong Kiet was a brilliant general in the 11th century (1019-1105). His real name was Ngo Tuan. To reward him for his military exploits, he was given the permission to use the family name of the royal Ly dynasty. As one of the most celebrated military commanders in Vietnamese history, Ly Thuong Kiet was known for a military expedition against the Champa Kingdom in 1069 and a pre-emptive attack against three southern prefectures of the Song Dynasty in 1075-1076.

His most remarkable feat was a strategic battle on the Nhu Nguyet River (in present-day Bac Ninh province) in 1077 that crushed the invasion carried out by the Song Dynasty.

Ly Thuong Kiet was also credited with composing a famous poem entitled “Mountains and Rivers of the Southern Country” which asserted Vietnam’s sovereignty and determination to repulse foreign aggressors.

In 2013, Ly Thuong Kiet was named as one of Vietnam’s 14 greatest national heroes by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Speaking at the anniversary, Vice Chairman of Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Phong emphasized that Ly Thuong Kiet temple is a cultural relic which contributes to enriching achievements in conservation and promotion of cultural heritage values ​​of Bac Ninh, creating a spiritual foundation, endogenous power to carry out industrial, urban and service goals of Yen Phong district, contributing to building Bac Ninh province into a centrally-run city by 2022.

In order to promote the value of the monument, Vice Chairman of Provincial People's Committee proposed Yen Phong district to direct Relic Management Board to build regulations, coordinate with Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, relevant agencies to compile documents introducing relic and General Ly Thuong Kiet; train professional tour guides to advertise relic to the people and visitors.

Yen Phong district needs to well manage, protect and boost the value of monuments according to the provisions of cultural heritage law; propaganda and educate the patriotic, cultural and revolutionary traditions of Yen Phong land, Bac Ninh - Kinh Bac homeland to domestic and international friends and tourists.
