Teacher of Bac Ninh High School for Gifted awarded Le Van Thiem Prize

(BNP) - On March 3, at the temple of teacher Chu Van An (Hai Duong province), the Vietnam Mathematical Society held the meeting on the occasion of Giap Thin Spring 2024 and awarded the 2023 Mathematics Prize.

The Le Van Thiem Prize was created in 1989 by Vietnam Mathematical Society and the first awards were made in 1990.

Each year, the prize is awarded to 1–2 mathematics teachers with outstanding achievements and 2–4 excellent high school students who have made many contributions to the Vietnamese mathematics sector.

In 2023, the whole country had 02 teachers and 04 excellent students awarding the Le Van Thiem Prize. Among them, Bac Ninh province is honored to have one teacher, Dr. Tran Ngoc Diep, a math teacher at Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, and one former student of Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, Khuc Dinh Toan, who won the Bronze Medal at the 2023 International Mathematical Olympiad.

Teacher Tran Ngoc Diep, born in 1988, is a PhD in mathematics in France and a lecturer at the Department of Mathematics, Hanoi National University of Education. He transferred to Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted in November 2019. During the two school years 2020–2021 and 2021–2022, Diep has directly taught and nurtured many students who won regional and national awards. In particular, in the 2022–2023 school year, the math team of Bac Ninh province, chaired by Dr. Tran Ngoc Diep, achieved the best performance since the re-establishment of the province, with 8/8 contestants winning prizes and the first National First Prize. For the first time in 12 years, a student won the International Math Olympiad.
