Significant events in Vietnam-Japan relations
(BNP) - Japan and Vietnam will commemorate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2023. The two countries' "infinite potential" relationship is nearing a turning point. This is an opportunity to reflect on the history of the Japan-Vietnam relationship and lay the groundwork for it to go even farther into the future, reaching out to the region and the world.

- On September 21, 1973, Vietnam and Japan officially established diplomatic relations.
- In 1975, Japan set up its Embassy in Hanoi and in 1976 Vietnam's Embassy was established in Tokyo. The two sides signed an agreement on payment of war compensation as non – refundable aid from the Japanese Government to Vietnam.
- In period of 1979 to 1991, due to the Cambodia issue, Japan consolidated agreed-upon aid and limited political relations.
- In 1992, Japan decided to reopen aid to Vietnam.
- On April, 1993, - In April 1993, the first Vietnamese Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet officially visited to Japan.
- In 1994, the first Japanese Prime Minister Murayama visited Vietnam.
- In 1995, the first General Secretary of Vietnam Do Muoi officially visited Japan.
- In April 2002, during Prime Minister Koizumi's visit to Vietnam, the two countries established a "long term, stable and reliable partnership".
- In July 2004, the two Foreign Ministers of two countries issued a Joint Statement defining "Reaching new heights of sustainable partnership”.
- In November 2006, during Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's official visit to Vietnam, the two sides signed a joint statement “Towards a strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia”.
- In November 2007, President Nguyen Minh Triet and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda signed the Joint Statement "Deepening strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan" and “Cooperation program towards strategic partnership”.
- In 2009, General Secretary Nong Duc Manh and Prime Minister Aso Taro signed a Joint Statement on the "Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia" and decided to elevate bilateral relations to the level of strategic partnership. Japan is the first member of the G7 to form a strategic cooperation with Vietnam.
- In October 2010, Prime Minister Naoto Kan paid an official visit to Viet Nam. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Prime Minister Naoto Kan signed the Viet Nam - Japan Joint Statement on the Comprehensive Development of Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia.
- In March 2014, Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang paid a State visit to Japan. On this occasion, the two countries issued the Viet Nam-Japan Joint Statement on the Establishment of the Extensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia.
- In September 2015, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong paid an official visit to Japan. The two countries issued the Joint Vision Statement on Viet Nam-Japan Relations.
- From 28 February 2017 to 05 March 2017, Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko paid their first State visit to Viet Nam.
- In October 2020, Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide paid an official visit to Viet Nam. This was his first overseas official visit since taking office as the Prime Minister.
- From November 22, 2021 to November 25, 2021, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh paid an official visit to Japan.
- In 2022, following the meeting of Prime Ministers Pham Minh Chinh and Kishida Fumio, 22 cooperation documents were exchanged between the two countries' ministries, branches, locations, and enterprises. The two Prime Ministers held a joint news conference to announce the major outcomes of the negotiations, underlining that the two sides committed to collaborate closely to support the deepening of their wide strategic cooperation between Vietnam and Japan, for the benefit of the two peoples as well as regional and global peace, stability, collaboration, and development.
- In 2023, Japan and Vietnam will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The relationship that is said to have “infinite potential” between the two countries is approaching a period of marked development. With the theme “Vietnam Japan companion, Towards the future – Reaching the world” – We hope that the diplomatic relationship between Vietnam and Japan will be better and better.
