According to planning, there are 5 centrally run urban areas including: Hanoi Capital, Ho Chi Minh City (expected to be a special urban area by 2030), Hai Phong, Can Tho, Da Nang (expected to be a type I urban area by 2030).).
08 provinces are oriented to become a centrally-run city from now until 2030 including Thua Thien-Hue, Khanh Hoa, Bac Ninh, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh, Hai Duong and Binh Duong.
