Space of "Dong Ho Painting Market" recreated in Song Ho ward, Thuan Thanh town
(BNP) - On the occasion of the Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day (November 23, 2005 – 2023), the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on November 22 recreated the space of "Dong Ho Painting Market" at Dong Ho Folk Painting Conservation Center (Song Ho ward, Thuan Thanh town).

Participants were leaders of the Department of Culture and Society, the Provincial People's Council; the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Thuan Thanh town, the Provincial Portal, the Provincial Tourism Association and travel agencies.
Dong Ho painting, whose full name is Dong Ho folk wood carving, is a line of Vietnamese folk paintings originating from Dong Ho village (Tu Khe area, Song Ho ward, Thuan Thanh town, Bac Ninh province). Dong Ho paintings are often released during the Lunar New Year, also known as Tet paintings.

On every occasion around Tet, every family buys Dong Ho paintings to hang, embellish and decorate the house to add color and atmosphere to celebrate Tet.

The Tet painting market in the past often took place at Dong Ho communal house on the 6th, 11th, 16th, 21st and 26th of December on the lunar calendar every year.

At the end of the market, the remaining paintings were packaged and put onto the boat. Just like that, the Diep (shell) paintings carry the cultural beauty of the Kinh Bac region as they travel with boats from North to South... Gradually, hanging Dong Ho paintings has become a springtime hobby for Vietnamese people.

The display area with a total of 20 booths recreates the ancient painting market space, thereby promoting the craft of selling votive goods and making Dong Ho paintings; introducing materials and tools for producing Dong Ho folk paintings; recreating the space using Dong Ho paintings with the old worship space, living room and office as well as arranging booths to introduce and promote Bac Ninh tourism; displaying and introducing handicraft products; advertising typical Bac Ninh cuisine and so on.

Coming to the market, people and tourists can immerse themselves in the space of Kinh Bac countryside with traditional products of their homeland as well as enjoy Quan Ho folk songs and water puppet shows, etc.
After cutting the opening ribbon to display the recreation of the "Dong Ho Painting Market" Space, delegates visited the booths, experienced making Dong Ho folk paintings and visited the Dong Ho Folk Painting Conservation Center.

The program takes place over 3 days (November 22 - 24, 2023) to recreate the traditional painting space, while shaping the construction of a tourism product in Bac Ninh province.
